Black KARE

In 2024, The Petersburg (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, will introduce a focused initiative to combat Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This program, enriched by the Chapter's history of impactful health programming and recent recognition as a Black KARE grant recipient, aims to address these challenges head-on.

Our initiative concentrates on education, prevention, and management of CKD, leveraging our longstanding community partnerships and introducing new collaborations with local health services and residential communities. Key activities include enhancing our award-winning Health and Wellness Seminar Series with a specific focus on CKD, offering comprehensive kidney education training for all members, and conducting targeted health screenings in communities like Pecan Acres. We're dedicated to raising awareness through a variety of engaging methods, from healthy cooking demonstrations featuring international cuisines to organizing significant events like the Black Family Wellness Expo and Organ Donor Awareness events. Furthermore, our approach includes direct outreach to younger generations, integrating health education into school curriculums, and empowering students as health ambassadors in their families.

Funding for this effort is made possible by Baxter Healthcare Corporation (“Baxter”).
